Non-Erosive Reflux Disease (NERD)

Struggling with Heartburn but Told Your Esophagus Looks Normal? You May Have N.E.R.D!

We are currently looking for patients for clinical studies focused on Non-Erosive Reflux Disease (NERD)—a common form of acid reflux where individuals experience symptoms without visible damage to the esophagus.  NERD can significantly affect quality of life, but current treatment options don’t work for everyone.   Our research is aimed at evaluating new therapies that offer relief and restore comfort.

NERD (Non-Erosive Reflux Disease) is a subtype of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It’s defined by:

  • Frequent heartburn or acid reflux
  • Normal upper endoscopy results (no visible esophageal erosion)
  • Persistent symptoms despite lifestyle changes or medications

It is believed that hypersensitivity to acid or dysfunction of the esophageal barrier plays a role in symptom development.

Common Symptoms of NERD:

  • Burning sensation in the chest (heartburn)
  • Regurgitation or sour taste in the mouth
  • Sensitivity after meals or while lying down
  • Throat clearing, cough, or hoarseness
  • Symptoms not fully controlled by proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are 18 to 70 years old
  • Have frequent heartburn or reflux symptoms
  • Had a normal upper endoscopy (no visible damage)
  • Are not satisfied with current medications

Why Participate in a NERD Study?

  • Access to new investigational medications not yet available to the public
  • No-cost evaluations including physical exams, pH testing, or symptom tracking
  • Opportunity to help researchers develop better treatment options for reflux disease

Compensation for time and travel may be provided. Compensation is TBD
